CREC: Literacy Services | Hartford, Connecticut

CREC’s Education Specialists partner with schools and districts to design and deliver professional learning that strengthens literacy instruction across all tiers of support. Our team includes general and special education experts skilled in evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading and the Connecticut Comprehensive K–3 Reading Model.

We collaborate with district leaders and educators to analyze data, identify patterns in student learning, and co-design systems of professional learning and coaching that build lasting capacity. Our approach integrates job-embedded coaching, data-driven reflection, and sustained professional learning cycles—ensuring that every educator gains the skills and confidence to improve student outcomes in reading and writing.

Professional Learning Focus Areas

Our specialists provide customized training, consultation, and coaching in areas such as:

  • Science of Reading Foundations: Deepening understanding of the cognitive and linguistic processes that underlie skilled reading and how to apply them in daily instruction.
  • Structured Literacy: Implementing systematic, explicit instruction in phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, and semantics.
  • Dyslexia and Reading Disabilities: Building educators’ expertise in identifying and supporting students with dyslexia through assessment interpretation and evidence-based intervention design.
  • Literacy Coaching and Leadership: Developing instructional coaches and literacy leaders to facilitate collaborative inquiry, classroom observations, and feedback cycles that improve practice.
  • Assessment and Data Literacy: Using screening, diagnostic, and progress-monitoring data to drive instruction and intervention decisions.
  • Inclusive Literacy Practices: Adapting literacy instruction to support multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and diverse learning profiles through universal design and multimodal access.

Professional Learning Model

CREC’s literacy professional learning is:

  • Evidence-Based: Grounded in research from the National Reading Panel, IDA standards, and contemporary frameworks such as Scarborough’s Reading Rope and the Simple View of Reading.
  • Sustained and Collaborative: Designed as a continuum of workshops, coaching sessions, and professional learning communities rather than one-time events.
  • Action-Oriented: Teachers apply strategies in real classrooms, reflect with a coach, and measure growth through student evidence.

Specialized Workshops

  • Foundations of the Science of Reading: Understanding how phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension interconnect.
  • Designing Structured Literacy Classrooms: Translating evidence into classroom practice with multisensory routines and explicit instructional sequences.
  • Supporting Students with Dyslexia: Recognizing characteristics, implementing intervention frameworks, and leveraging assistive technology for access and engagement.
  • The Art and Science of Literacy Coaching: Building schoolwide systems of continuous improvement through coaching conversations, modeling, and co-teaching cycles.
