CREC International Magnet School Embraces Global Theme
(South Windsor, CT) CREC’s International Magnet School for Global Citizenship is embracing its theme.
On September 10 and September 11, the school’s fifth-grade students welcomed 48 students and seven teachers from Doshisha International Academy, an elementary school in Kyoto, Japan. During the visit, students engaged in collaborative learning through a variety of activities and visited Old Sturbridge Village. The goal was to build an international perspective and appreciation for both individuals and the global community.
The September visit marked the first time the students met in person. Throughout the summer, they had only communicated online.
“It was kind of exciting to see people from a different country,” said Uzoma, a CREC student. “It was kind of funny because, in many ways, they are different, but we are also the same.”
This is the second year CREC has hosted Doshisha International Academy, and the two schools hope to continue the relationship in the years to come.
Following the visit by the delegation from Japan, CREC International Magnet School for Global Citizenship celebrated the International Day of Peace.
On September 21, students and staff wore white in observance and gathered on the school’s soccer field to recite a peace pledge and to share their wishes for peace. Following the all-school celebration, students returned to their classrooms to participate in additional International Day of Peace activities.
The goal was to help students understand the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully, while also learning about the importance of being global citizens who understand the perspectives of others.
The lessons learned during both the International Day of Peace celebration and the visit from Doshisha International Academy aligned with the school’s global theme. This theme is enhanced by the world-standard curriculum that is delivered through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme offered by the school.
The CREC International Magnet School for Global Citizenship is an interdistrict magnet school that serves students in preschool through grade five. To attend the school, students must apply through the Greater Hartford Regional School Choice Office lottery, which opens October 15. For more information about the school, visit www.crecschools.org.
