Nick Chanese
Assistant Superintendent of CREC Schools
Nick has been a Connecticut educator since 2002. He was an English teacher at Parish Hill and East Hartford High Schools before joining CREC. During his time in East Hartford, Nick became a co-director of the Central Connecticut Writing Project and co-founded the Central Connecticut Student Writing Project—a summer writing institute for students in grades 4-12. Through the Writing Project, he worked with many Connecticut teachers and presented his work at several national conferences. Since its inception, The Student Writing Project grew every year, became the official summer enrichment program for Wethersfield Public Schools, and eventually included pre-service teachers from CCSU as part of its staff.
In the fall of 2010, Nick joined the teaching staff at CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts. As a teacher there, Nick taught all grade levels, became a department team leader, and took part in curriculum work at the district level for both English/Language Arts and Capstone. In the fall of the 2015-2016 school year, Nick became the assistant principal of the Arts Academy and was promoted to school principal the following school year. Under his leadership, the Arts Academy de-leveled classes, transitioned to standards-based grading, and built a culture founded upon the principles of “come as you are” and “keep it weird.” Nick is also part of the design team that worked with the Barr Foundation to completely re-envision the high school experience.
Nick Chanese holds a BA in English Education from the University of Delaware, an MA in English Literature from Central Connecticut State University, and a 6th-year Certificate in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut. He lives with his family in Windsor, CT.
