CREC Discovery Academy Staff Show Support for Wethersfield

(Wethersfield, CT) CREC’s Discovery Academy recently participated in Jamie’s Run to support its new neighbors and a worthwhile cause.

Jamie’s Run is an annual 5K race that honors the memory of Jamie Lynne Knotts, a Wethersfield resident, and “supports the search for a cure to pediatric cancers, while lessening the financial and emotional burdens of children and families fighting these diseases.” In 2010, Jamie died of a rare type of liver tumor when she was only 5.5 months old. The race draws runners and walkers from throughout New England.

“I saw Jamie’s Run as a great opportunity for our staff members to support a local cause that benefits children and their families and to begin to build relationships in Wethersfield, our new hometown,” said Principal Lynn Toper.

The CREC Discovery Academy moved to its permanent home on Cumberland Avenue in Wethersfield from two temporary locations in Hartford. The new, 72,000 square foot building officially opened to students on the first day of school—September 2, and it was built to enhance the school’s theme of interactive exploration and science, technology, engineering, and math.

The CREC Discovery Academy currently serves students in preschool through grade four. It will expand to include fifth-grade classes next school year.

Anyone interested in attending the CREC Discovery Academy must apply through the Greater Hartford Regional School Choice Office lottery, which is open now through January 29, 2016. For more information about the lottery and CREC’s schools, visit www.crecschools.org.
