CREC Foundation Announces Recipients of 2017 Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship for Overcoming Adversity


(Hartford, CT) The CREC Foundation is awarding the 2017 Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship for Overcoming Adversity to two students from CREC Two Rivers Magnet High School, one student from Cromwell High School and one from Bristol Central High School. Each of the four recipients will be awarded a $1,500 scholarship that is renewable for four years while the student is enrolled in school. This scholarship program, open to graduating seniors in CREC magnet schools and member school districts, recognizes students who have exhibited determination, integrity and perseverance in the face of adversity. Applicants are required to submit an essay describing how they dealt with hardship while reaching a life goal. CREC Foundation received 48 applications from students in 17 of CREC’s member districts. The four recipients are:

Janasia Body, a Hartford resident graduating from CREC Two Rivers Magnet High School, plans on majoring in Political Science at Central Connecticut State University.Julia Liseo, a Cromwell resident from Cromwell High School, plans on majoring in Occupational Therapy at Quinnipiac University.Yvette Oppong, a Hartford resident is graduating from CREC Two Rivers Magnet High School. She plans on majoring in Biology and PreMed at the University of Connecticut.Thalia Palacios, a Bristol resident graduating from Bristol Central High School, plans on double majoring in animal management and the pre-veterinary program at the University of Rhode Island. The students were formally recognized at the CREC Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 17, 2017. The Bruce E. Douglas Scholarship for Overcoming Adversity was established in 2015 to mark Bruce Douglas’ retirement from CREC, where he was executive director for 14 years. Bruce E. Douglas dedicated nearly 50 years of his career to educating Connecticut’s children and families. His transformative leadership, divergent thinking, and inspirational mentorship have helped shape the educational and social landscape of Connecticut. First-year scholarship recipients are attending the University of Hartford, University of Connecticut and Yale University.
