About Connecticut Adult Numeracy and Mathematics Institute
CREC's Adult Training and Development Network (ATDN) provides teacher training in mathematics in order to develop and encourage numerate adult students. Through ATDN's Connecticut Adult Numeracy and Mathematics Institute (CANMI), sessions offer professional development using the principles of the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN), the adult affiliate of the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
Trainings are grounded in current, adult-specific research and connected to the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards for Adult Education in Mathematics.
Understanding of place value, number and operation sense, ratio and proportional reasoning, and algebraic thinking form the core for adult mathematics education. Elements of fractions, decimals, and percentages; geometry and measurement; and statistics are topics through which these key concepts are developed. The goal of CANMI is to build teachers' base of content and pedagogical knowledge as well as increase student learning by having an effect on teacher behavior.
